Mr. D’s Resource Update (Week of April 29th)

The excitement will be building all week long at Devonshire School, leading up to Student Appreciation Day on Friday, May 3rd!  This annual extravaganza includes the Griffin’s Tale assembly in the morning, which features Northwestern University students performing a series of skits based on short stories written by Devonshire kids, and the S.A.D. assembly in the afternoon, featuring the famous slideshow!

Second Grade

Writing

This week resource 2nd graders will keep using the SRA Reasoning and Writing curriculum (Level C) to practice creating short paragraphs that include a topic sentence and detailed supporting sentences.  They also will practice adding pertinent adjectives and adverbs to make their sentences more detailed.

Fourth Grade

Math

This week resource 4th graders will continue using the Connecting Math Concepts curriculum (Level D) to practice converting improper fractions into mixed numbers or division problems, adding and subtracting whole numbers and fractions, using multiplication to check answers to long-division problems, determining elapsed time, and solving story problems that describe real-life shopping scenarios.

Reading

This week resource 4th graders will keep using the Voyager Passport curriculum (Level D) to practice identifying the sounds made by various letter-groups, decoding unknown words, reading and spelling common sight words, reading sentences and paragraphs with accuracy and fluency, and applying various reading strategies (such as inferring, connecting and summarizing) in order to improve their level of comprehension. They also will take a 1-minute AimsWeb R-CBM fluency test to measure their progress in reading aloud quickly and correctly.

Writing

This week resource 4th graders will keep working on fiction writing.  They will focus on developing interesting characters, problems and solutions when crafting these stories.  They also will practice including dialogue, action and setting in their fictional narratives.

Spelling

Resource 4th graders will be working on Unit 29 in Spelling this week. The five core words are listed below.

Fifth Grade

Reading

This week resource 5th graders will continue using SRA Reading Mastery (Level 4) to practice reading and spelling advanced sight words, learning and using new vocabulary terms, reading sentences and paragraphs with accuracy and fluency, and applying various reading strategies (such as inferring, connecting and imaging) in order to boost their level of comprehension. They also will take a 1-minute AimsWeb R-CBM fluency assessment to gauge their progress in reading aloud quickly and correctly.

Writing

This week resource 5th graders will keep working on fiction writing.  They will focus on developing interesting characters, problems and solutions when crafting these stories.  They also will practice including dialogue, action and setting in their fictional narratives.
