This Week in ELL- March 11-15

This week students will be making up ISAT tests on Monday and Tuesday. ELL groups will start again on Wednesday. Here’s what we have on the agenda this week!
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will begin Unit 6 Chapter 1 cover the following concepts:
- Learn new transportation vocabulary words
- Have a discussion using new vocabulary words
-Write riddles about vocabulary words
-Learn when to use the words: before, after, and when
- Learn about bad, worse, worst
- Understand the meaning of the word should
- Read the book Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel
Intermediate Center- Group 2
Students learn the following concepts:
- Review prepositions and question words (where/who)
- Learn about the places and workers in school
- Learn new high frequency words
- Interview a classmate
-Reread the book Time and Routines
4th Building
Students will:
- Describe places using sentence frames
- Learn about compound words
- Read the article “Photographing The World” and find the main idea and supporting details of each section of the article
- Compare text features
- Work on Power Writing
- Learn about irregular plurals
3rd Building
Students will:
- Read the science article and share their main idea and supporting details diagram
- Learn about common and proper nouns
- Discuss the science article
- Learn test taking strategies
- Write captions for images from the science article
- Practice new vocabulary
5th Building
This week students will:
- Continue to discuss the new vocabulary
- Learn about the theme of a story
- Work on Power Writing
- Learn about present tense action verbs and subjects
- Learn about making inferences
This Week in ELL- March 5th-8th

This week, it is all about the ISAT for grades 3rd-5th. Parents, please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and a good breakfast everyday this week. This will help him/her during the test. Most ELL groups will be cancelled this week or meet for a short period of time. We will finish up some of the activities we didn’t complete last week.

2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will think and write about the things they learned while reading the nonfiction book What Makes Leaves Change?. Students will take a unit test at the end of the week.
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will continue Unit 5 and cover the following concepts:
- Learn about possessives
- Work on finding the main idea and supporting details in a text
-Learn about conjunctions
-Understand Past and Present Progressive
Intermediate Center- Group 2 & 3
Students will finish Unit 2 and begin Unit 3. They will learn the following concepts:
- Review High Frequency words – Practice sounding out words -Practice writing and identifying number words -Learn about prepositions
-Practice telling and reading time - Learn about question words: who, what, when ,and where -Practice reading sight words – Read the book Time and Routines
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” Students will write a descriptive paragraph about an extreme place or extreme weather. They will learn new test taking strategies and apply word knowledge to check their understanding of the unit’s vocabulary. Lastly, students will work on Main Idea and Supporting Details outlines.
3rd Building
Students will continue with the second part of the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will read the science article A Protected Place. They will build background knowledge about the article by watching a video and previewing the article’s vocabulary words. They will also practice making inferences as they read.
5th Building
This week students will begin Unit 4. They will learn the Unit’s key words and discuss how to find the theme of a story. They will work on Power Writing and look at present tense action verbs.
This Week in ELL- February 11-15

2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will revisit multiple meaning words, learn to write a paragraph in Writer’s Workshop, and read the nonfiction text ” Why Do Leaves Change Color?”
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will start Unit 5 and cover the following concepts:
- Learn how to read a user’s manual and answer questions
- Work on finding the main idea and supporting details in a text
-Learn about possessives
- Read “The Quilt Story”
-Understand Conjunctions and Present Progressive
Intermediate Center- Group 2
Students will begin Unit 2 and learnt eh following concepts:
- Review High Frequency words – Practice sounding out words -Continue to practice school words -Practice reading sight words
-Practice basic comprehension skills
Intermediate Center Group 3
Students will begin Unit 1, Lesson 2 All About School. They will learn the following concepts:
- School words -Sort school words by beginning sound – Learn the sounds for C, F, and M - Write about school using new vocabulary words
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” Students will preview and read a new science article, learn about common and proper nouns by playing a game, and understand a new test taking strategy. Lastly, students will answer discussion questions about the science article and write about it.
3rd Building
Students will continue with the second part of the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will review making inferences and do Power Writing. Students will also learn about count and non-count words and learn new key words. Lastly, students will read a science article.
5th Building
This week students continue to explore the question “What does it take to settle a new place?” Students will revisit compound words and learn about Poetic Elements. Students will also work on a cause and effect paragraph during Writing Workshop, read a nonfiction book about ghost towns, and take a unit test.
This Week in ELL- February 4th-8th

2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will learn about multiple meaning words and read a Science Article. Students will compare and contrast a Science Poem and a Science Article and do Power Writing. Lastly, students will revisit multiple meaning words.
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will start Unit 5 and cover the following concepts:
- Contractions – The past tense of verbs ending in y and e -Using these and those - Review vocabulary words -Making inferences
Intermediate Center- Group 2
Students will begin Unit 2 and learnt eh following concepts:
- Review High Frequency words – Practice sounding out words -Learn shape and school words -Practice reading sight words
-Practice basic comprehension skills
Intermediate Center Group 3
Students will begin Unit 1, Lesson 1 All About Family. They will learn the following concepts:
- Family words -Sort family words by beginning sound – Learn the sounds of B, F, and M - Write about family using new vocabulary words
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” Students will start the second part of the unit and learn new key words. They will review how to be descriptive and identify the main idea and details. Students will also do Power Writing and learn about irregular plurals. Lastly, students will practice visualizing while reading and preview a new science article.
3rd Building
Students will continue with the second part of the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will review making inferences and practice defining words. They will work on finding the main idea and details in a story and do Power Writing. Students will also learn about count and non-count words and learn new key words.
5th Building
This week students continue to explore the question “What does it take to settle a new place?” They will learn about compound words and read a narrative poem. They will discuss a poem’s structure and setting, do Power Writing, and review types of pronouns. Students will revisit compound words and learn about Poetic Elements. Lastly, students will work on a cause and effect paragraph during Writing Workshop.
This Week in ELL- January 28th- February 4th

ACCESS testing will continue this week. Parents, please make sure your child has a good breakfast and plenty of sleep this week. All Building groups will be canceled and Center groups will meet for a shorter amount of time and days.

ACCESS testing will continue this week. Parents, please make sure your child has a good breakfast and plenty of sleep this week. All Building groups will be canceled and Center groups will meet for a shorter amount of time and days. Center groups will continue working on Unit 1 and learn about introductions and sentences, as well as practice their alphabet sounds and high frequency words. Good luck students!

This Week in ELL- January 14th-18th

What are we up to this week?
* Starting Wednesday, January 16th, ELL students will begin taking the ACCESS test. This test measures how much progress our students are making in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ELL classes will be canceled for some groups in order to allow time to administer all parts of the test.
* Parents, it is especially important for students to have a good breakfast and get plenty of sleep during ACCESS testing time. This will help them do their very best!
2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will learn about question words. Students will also review the content of the poem and write a poem about a season. Students will familiarize themselves with the format of the ACCESS test.
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will finish the chapter Critters and Crawlers. They will learn about similes and regular and irregular verbs. Students will begin the next chapter with a chapter pretest. They will learn the new vocabulary words for that chapter, learn to use the words these and those, and learn about contractions. Lastly, students will read the book “The Three Bears.”
Intermediate Center- Group 2
Students will begin Unit 2. They will also review the high frequency and family words daily, and sing the ABC song to learn letter sounds. They will learn about polite words and about making introductions. Students will start learning about the short a sound and familiarize themselves with the US map.
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” Students will take a unit test that will check for their understanding of vocabulary and reading strategies we’ve covered so far. Students will continue working on finding the main idea.
3rd Building
Students will begin the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will review making inferences and the academic vocabulary words they have learned in the unit. They will learn new test taking strategies and take a vocabulary quiz.
5th Building
This week students continue to explore the question “What does it take to settle a new place?” Students will learn about demonstrative and indefinite pronouns. Students will discuss questions about the play, and take a vocabulary quiz.
This Week in ELL- January 7th-11th

Welcome back students!
What are we up to this week?
2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will read the poem “What Makes the Seasons” and learn about question words. Students will also review the content of the poem and write a poem about a season. Students will review the vocab words they have learned so far in preparation for a vocabulary text later in the week. Students will learn useful test taking strategies and listen for important details.
Intermediate Center- Group 1
Students will continue with the chapter “Critters and Crawlers” and familiarize themselves with its vocabulary. They will learn about animal words in singular and plural and when to use there was and there were. Students will also learn when to use the word this and the word that, and familiarize themselves with different animal habitats. Students will read the book Owl Moon and make predictions about the story, they will learn about figurative language, regular and irregular verbs, and work on comprehension activities.
Intermediate Center- Group 2
Students will begin Unit 1: Nice to Meet You! They will take a school tour every day to familiarize themselves with the building and other teachers. Students will learn to say and practice basic greetings, familiarize themselves with an U.S. calendar, and learn how to say numbers from 1-100. Students will also learn to state their address and phone number, practice saying and using high frequency words, and become familiar with several letter sounds.
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” They will learn about word origins and figurative language, and review plurals. They will reread the free verse poem and write one of their own. Towards the end of the week, students will take a unit test that will check for their understanding of vocabulary and reading strategies we’ve covered so far. Lastly, students will continue working on finding the main idea.
3rd Building
Students will begin the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will review making inferences and practice find the main idea with short, daily activities. They will review the academic vocabulary words they have learned in the unit and read the story “Two Old Potatoes and Me.” Students will review what articles to use with nouns starting with vowels and consonants and write about their favorite food. They will learn new test taking strategies and take a vocabulary quiz.
5th Building
This week students continue to explore the question “What does it take to settle a new place?” Students will review all the vocabulary words and read the play “The Road to Rhyolite.” They will write their own lines of dialogue and learn about demonstrative and indefinite pronouns. Students will discuss questions about the play, learn useful test taking strategies, and write a short conversation between two characters.
This Week in ELL- December 17th-21st

What are we up to this week?
2nd Building
Second graders will continue to explore the new unit “Everything Changes.” Students will continue to practice using their 5 senses to write and tell descriptions about things. They will read the poem “What Makes the Seasons” and learn about question words. Students will also review the content of the poem and write a poem about a season.
Intermediate Center
Students will begin a new chapter about Toys. Students will take a chapter test and pretest for the next chapter. Students will review what verbs are and learn about regular and irregular verbs. They will also discuss the meaning of common idioms. Students will begin a new chapter called “Critters and Crawlers” and familiarize themselves with its vocabulary.
4th Building
Students will continue to explore the unit titled: “Amazing Places.” They will learn about word origins and figurative language, write a descriptive paragraph, and write a letter to an author asking questions about a story and telling about their favorite part.
3rd Building
Students will begin the unit titled: Life in the Soil. Students will review how to tell what happens using a sequence and sequence words. Students will work on Power Writing and making nouns plural. Lastly, students will review making inferences and practice find the main idea with short, daily activities.
5th Building
This week students continue to explore the question “What does it take to settle a new place?” Students will review all the vocabulary words and read the play “The Road to Rhyolite.” They will write their own lines of dialogue and learn about demonstrative and indefinite pronouns.
