Coming Together in Skokie- Author Deborah Ellis Visits!

Our students here at the Center are proof of the rich mixture of cultures in Skokie. We took the opportunity to build on this diverse community by participating in the Coming Together in Skokie program, which highlighted the Assyrian community and culture this year.

In March, Deborah Ellis visited us for a discussion of her book- Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees. In this book, Ellis interviews Iraqi children who have been displaced along with their families to Jordan, Syria, and North America, and crowded refugee camps throughout the Middle East.

Every person living far from the place they consider home faces a unique set of fears and challenges as they struggle to make life work in a new place. This was a meaningful event for parents from the Center and other community members that joined together to hear from the author and talk about these important and untold stories.
