Our hope is that students will choose different activities throughout their three years at OOJH. Electives are staffed based on the number of students choosing each activity. Their choices are:

Floor Hockey: This high cardiovascular game exposes students to experience stick eye coordination. Expectations, rules and safety are reviewed on the first day, teams are formed and gameplay begins. Refinement of skills are developed through gameplay.

Pickleball: This moderately cardiovascular game is played on a court using a hard plastic paddle and a whiffle ball. It was created by two fathers that were trying to provide their children with a new game that blended badminton and tennis that develops hand eye coordination. Unique rules govern the game and it is an easy game to learn, fun to play and more recreational in nature.

Creative Dance: In this unit, students will form groups and have an opportunity to make up a dance routine. Guidelines for the dance will be provided and groups will be responsible for performing their dance to the dance class on the last day of the unit, 2/27/12, for a grade.

Doing as many repetitions as you can in 30 second intervals is how you accumulate your score. Grades are based on your score average as well as improvement and effort.

As we complete the tumbling and basketball skill instruction portions of these two units, starting this Thursday, 12/13/12, 6th graders will be transitioning into Circus Arts and Basketball Gameplay on alternating days, while 7th and 8th graders will take those units day by day as an elective choice.

BASKETBALL GAMEPLAY- Students will apply the skills learned last week and will play half and full court style games. They will learn zone and man to man defenses as well as demonstrate their knowledge of the game through their actions on the court. Students will be able to choose to participate in either competitive or non-competitive games. Gameplay will be graded for 7th & 8th graders based a rubric.

CIRCUS ARTS is a unit that challenges students balance, general and hand eye coordination, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance through exposure to a variety of unique activities that are exciting and fun to learn. Students work at their own pace acquiring skills that vary from simple to more complex as they move through the progressions. Grading is based on performing as many skills as you can proficiently. Below is a list of what will be included in the unit.

  1. Balance Board-Students will learn how to hold static balance while on a moving board. Safety is emphasized.
  2. DDR-Dance Dance Revolution video game; Players stand on a “dance platform” or stage and hit colored arrows with their feet to match rhythmically step patterns of varying tempos viewed on the screen.
  3. Diablo-This equipment challenges coordination, timing, and patience. Students will learn how to spin the Diablo on a string, toss and catch the diablo and perform more advanced tricks when basics are mastered.
  4. Hula Hoop-Students will manipulate the hoop around the wrist, waist, feet as well as learn how to jump over and through it, just to mention a few.

  8. Stick Tricks-Students will learn various ways to balance a plastic 3’ wand and progress to skills requiring movement and balance simultaneously.
  9. Stilts-Students will attempt to balance and travel on the stilts; different locomotor patterns will be performed as well.
  10. Spinning Plates-This is a challenging skill. Patience is required as students try to learn how to get the plate spinning and then maintain the spin while moving the plate in a variety of ways.
  11. Tumbling-Students will continue to practice tumbling skills and work through the challenging progression.
