The Interhouse Track Meets were a huge success. Students were enthusiastic, well behaved and showed team spirit throughout the day. Out of 870 points to be earned, the final score was Olympians 438, Oracles 432, sooo close! The captains did a fantastic job organizing. Here’s the breakdown:

Approximately 112 students participated in the Dodging Cancer Dodgeball Tournament. A great time was had by all!

The Big Event this week is the “Little Nine” Township Track Meet for the Interscholastic Track Teams. The meet will be hosted at Niles North High School on 5/21/13, (raindate 5/22/13), from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Students going will be responsible for making up work missed.

AND IN P.E.:

The 6th graders finish out the school year with Diamond Games and Four Square Tennis, while 7th & 8th graders have their final elective choice units of the year. Their choices are tennis, outdoor team handball and diamond games. 

• Diamond Games: Students will begin with kickball, an old school favorite, to work on throwing, catching, fielding and rules of play and then move into fat bat (a whiffle ball type game) and then softball to incorporate batting and safety.
• Four Square Tennis: Students will enjoy playing this hand eye coordination game, but will take it to the tennis courts where the ball must travel over the net. Students will get an orientation to the markings on a tennis court for an easier transition to tennis next year.
• Tennis: Students will be exposed to the game of tennis and learn proper grip, forehand and backhand groundstrokes and serving as well as learning rules and scoring for the game. Time is limited, but students should learn enough to be able to practice their skills throughout the summer. This is a hard game to master, patience and persistence is important to remember when learning how to play this lifetime activity.
• Outdoor Team Handball: Students love the indoor version of this game. By taking it outside and playing it on a soccer field triples the space for players to move and run. The outdoor version of team handball uses a small leather ball, allows only a single goal keeper, uses a restraining arc for shooting for goals and permits ball rolling. Once you play it you’re hooked. 

Additionally, the optional written test on Agility and Flexibility will be given on Thursday, 5/23/13. Study guides and review sheets are available on the P.E. website.

Students will follow a modified flexible schedule for the day to block PE and Encore back to back to allow for this track meet to be run during the school day. Special Note: The high jump will be run off during the lunch period for 6th and 8th graders, Monday, 5/13/13 and for the 7th graders, Tuesday, 5/14/13. For high jumpers and captains only, grab your lunch, change if you’re competing and get into the “A” gym ASAP.

DODGING CANCER DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT-THURSDAY, 5/16/13, 3:30-5:00 P.M.

We are so excited to run this tournament. We have 16 teams that will play into two separate pools for the first round. Based on the WIN/LOSS/TIE records after the first round, two elimination brackets will be created. The Semifinal and final of both brackets will play on the “BIG COURT” in the “B” Gym for the rest to watch. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team. We anticipate the tournament going from 3:30-5:00, but it is our first time doing this, so your flexibility would be appreciated if we go over bit.

Remember, you must arrange your own ride home.

This week will conclude the Track & Field unit. We will be doing relays this week, schedule a make up day for students that may have missed some performance assessments and conclude the week with the Track & Field Written test.

WRITTEN TEST ON TRACK & FIELD-The P.E. Department will give the written test next Friday, 5/10/13: Study Guides & Review sheets are available on the P.E. Website. This is the only required test for the trimester so study up. The second test of the trimester is optional.

We will be going outside for P.E. for the rest of the school year so please dress appropriately for the weather. You may wear sweatpants and sweatshirts, gloves or a hat. Please be prepared for the unusual weather. That being said, it is difficult to list the day to day activity for the week, since decisions are made based on the weather for the day. Generally, we run longer distances on cooler days, shorter runs on warmer days and we alternate running and field events. If we stay indoors, students will participate in shot put and high jump, and we long jump outdoors.

The Track teams had a great turnout at the organizational meeting last Tuesday. We have about 100 students on all the teams, let’s hope for some good spring weather, now!!

There was also a great turnout of student volunteers that will be helping organize the “Relay Field Day” event for the American Cancer Society. Thank you to all in advance that stepped up to serve your community.

Last week students participated in Physical Fitness testing. So many students improved scores from the fall. All should be proud of their achievements and growth. We will run the mile in a few weeks to complete the test.

ATTENTION: If you are a 7th or 8th Grade Boy or Girl and are interested in joining OOJH Track & Field Teams, attend the Tuesday, April 2nd Orientation/Organizational meeting at 3:30 p.m.: Boys meet in the A gym, Girls Meet in the B Gym. There are NO tryouts for these teams. You can sign up in advance through the “Athletics Link” on the school website. Students must have a medical form and concussion form turned into Mrs. Neiweem, our school nurse, before practices begin. Forms are available on the school website, “Athletics Link” as well. This week P.E. students will be doing Spring Physical Fitness testing and should strive to improve their scores from the fall. All students will be in P.E. Monday through Wednesday and Health “D” students will begin their health instruction in the classroom with Mrs. Doane on Thursday, April 4th.
