Dear families,

I hope you enjoyed the spring weather this weekend! Please take a look at what we are working on this week.

Math:

Chapter 12: Fractions

Learning Objective: Students will be able to

-Identify whether a shape is divided into equal fractional parts.

-Read, write, and identify unit fractions for halves, thirds and fourths

 

Reading:

This week, we are working on Extended Reader Responses. We will be reading book and responding to a question related to the book by look for proof in the text.

 

Phonics:

Unit 14: Variant Vowel /00/ syllable patterns

Students will be able to: recongnize and read words with the /oo/ sound

i.e.- brew, blue, group, cashew

Writing:

We are  working on our biographies this week. Students are taking notes on their famous person’s birth, childhood and adulthood. They are also working on turning these facts into paragraphs.

Science:

We are excitedly observing our caterpillars. They have each turned into a Chraysalis and now we are awaiting butterflies to emerge…hopefully by the end of the week!!

We will be taking the final MAP test of the year.  Our class will be taking the reading MAP on Friday, May 3rd. Please make sure students are well-rested and have had a healthy breakfast.

Math:

We will finish up Chapter 11 (Money) this week and move on to chapter 12: Fractions

We will be starting a biography research project. This week, we will learn about what a biography is and we will

also be choosing someone to research.

Information for Families

April 8th, 2013

Dear Families,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! We had a wonderful time learning about the life cycle of butterflies on our field trip on Friday! Today, we had a Skokie Polica Officer come in and discuss bicycle safety with our class. This week, students will be taking the COGAT test (Cognitive Abilities Test). You should have recieved information about this test in the mail.

Also, During this school year, I have been working on a team with other District 68 teachers and administrators to develop a reading and language arts curriculum that is aligned with the Common Core Standards and builds on current knowledge and existing best practice in grades K-5. As part of this team, for the next few weeks, I will be piloting two or three reading/language arts programs in our classroom. While some things will be different during our reading time, your second grader will be still working on building phonics, spelling, and comprehension skills, reading fluency, and vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.

Objective: Students will be able to read words r-controlled o syllables.

We are working on poetry! This week we are going to be writing couplets.

Chapter 7: Metric Measurement of Length

-Students will learn that length is a measurement concept that describes how long or short an object is.

This week, we will review the concepts in chapter 7 and take a chapter test on Wednesday and Thursday!

Reading:

Questioning- We are working on asking questions before, during and after reading a story (independently).

Phonics:

Unit 27: Prefix un-

Objective: Students will be able to read words with the prefix un- and understand that adding the prefix un- to a base word changes a word’s meaning.

i.e. unwise, unclip, unhelpful

*  Our spelling test will be on 2/28.

Writing:

We are working on writing expository paragraphs!

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! On this blog, you will find about all the happenings in room 116! We are a busy bunch, so please make sure you check the blog regularly as I will be making constant updates.

Here are a few things to know:

School starts at 8:40 and it is really imporant for your child to be at school on time everyday.  School ends at 2:30 pm on Mondays and3:00 pm every other day.

Please be sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a nutritious breakfast everyday.

You can find the lunch menu on the district website as it changes every month.

Dear families,

Room 116 is off to a great start! We are already busy learning, exploring, and discussing many things. I will post a weekly blog highlighting the things are are learning. I will post reminders and and important upcoming dates. Please feel free to email me at asarangan@skokie68.org with any questions.

REMINDERS:

-Don’t foget to send your child with a reusable water bottle. It can be kept at school until Friday, or you can have your child bring it home daily to wash.

-Please send in an old tshirt (adult size) for your child to use as a smock for Art.

- Please send in a healthy snack with your child daily! It helps them stay nourished throughout the morning.

- MAP testing will begin this week. Our class will take the Reading MAP on Friday, August 31st and the Math MAP on Wednesday,  Sep 5th. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.

Ticket to Read

Attention Families,

Your child is coming home with a letter that explains how to use a great website called Ticket to Read. This website is paid for by our school disctrict and is a great supplement to your child’s learning.  The letter includes a username and password so that your child can log on daily from home. Each child’s account is set up based on their current reading level and will challenge them appropriately.   I will also be able to track and monitor your child’s progress.  Please encourage your child to spend some time regulary on this site.

    Party: As per school rules, only PTA room parents are permitted to attend the classroom party.   Don’t forget to contribute something to make our celebration spook-tacular!

      Costumes/parade: Please remember to send in your child’s costume to school on Halloween morning if they are going to dress-up.  Students should be able to put on their costumes themselves .  There will be an all-school Halloween parade in the afternoon at 2:15pm.  All families are invited to attend the parade.

Objective: Students will be able to recognize plural words and understand that they mean more than one by adding -ies, -es, -s

i.e. acorns, cities, classes, dishes

Dear Families,

I wish you all a happy and healthy 2013! I hope you enjoyed some family time over winter break. I sent home parent-teacher conference forms. Please look over it and choose at least 3 times that work for you. I’ll get back to you with your final time as soon as I have recieved all of the forms.  Also, please help me in welcoming our new student teacher, Karolina Mis. She is from Loyola University and will be student teaching with us until late spring.  Lastly, our class will take the winter MAP test this week and next week. On Thursday Jan 10th, we will be taking the reading portion of the MAP test. Please make sure your child is well rested and has a healthy breakfast!

 Dear Families,

Don’t forget that we have MAP testing this Tuesday and Thursday. Also, I

will be sending little yellow cards confirming your conference time. I tried

my best to give you times that were your top choices.

Math:

Chapter 5- Multiplication and Division

Objective: – Students will use equal groups and subtraction to learn how

to divide.

Reading:

This week we are working on the connecting strategy. Students are reading passages and comparing and contrasting two situations within the passage. They are looking for clue words such as, both, different, alike, unlike.

Phonics:

Unit 23: er, or ending

Objective: Students will be able to read words with -er, -or endings and understand that this changes the meaning of the word from a verb to noun.

i.e. writer, painter, visitor

* A spelling list went home today. There will be a weekly spelling test on Fridays.

Writing:

We will learn how to persuade others using advertisements

Chapter 6- Multiplication of 2s, 5s, and 10s

Objective: – students will count by 2s, 5s, 10s to multiply.

Reading:

Questioning- We are working on asking questions before, during and after reading a story.

Phonics:

Unit 24: Comparatives (-er/-est) endings

Objective: Students will be able to read words with -er, -est endings and understand that this done to compare two or more things.

i.e. hottest, sadder, lighter, funniest

* A spelling list went home today. There will be a weekly spelling test on Fridays.

Writing:

We are working on writing opinion paragraphs!

Reminders + Valentines Day Party

Hello!

Please take a look at the following reminders:

We will have a math test on multiplication tables of 2, 5, 10 along with related multiplication and division facts on Thursday.  If your child is planning on bringing valentines, please make sure they bring one for everyone in the class.  Our Valentines Day party is on Thursday, Feb 14th. We would really appreciate if you could sign up to send something in for our party. Please email Ana (our room parent) anatbryant@yahoo.com to let her know what you can send. Here is what we need:

We had a lot of fun at our Valentine’s Day party- Thanks to Ana and Karen for setting up the party for us!!

Math:

Chapter 7: Metric Measurement of Length

-Students will learn that length is a measurement concept that describes how long or short an object is.

-Students will learn that meter (m) and centimeter (cm) are standard metric units of measure for length.

Reading:

Questioning- We are working on asking questions before, during and after reading a story.

Phonics:

Unit 27: Prefix un-

Objective: Students will be able to read words with the prefix un- and understand that adding the prefix un- to a base word changes a word’s meaning.

i.e. unwise, unclip, unhelpful

* A spelling list went home today.  Our spelling test will be on 2/28.

Writing:

We are working on writing expository paragraphs!

If your child receives math support on Wednesdays and Thursdays, please make note that there will be NO math support this week due to the speed stack tournament after school. Please plan to have your child come home at 3 pm, unless they go to childcare.
