7th and 8th Grade students will be giving presentations about the Visual Arts Careers that they have been researching. Students will be speaking about Graphic Designers, Fashion Designers, Video Game Design Industry, Animation Designers, Photographers, and many more. Students have been using an online tool, Prezi. This is a visual presentation tool that also has an artistic format.

6th Grade students will finalize the Cave Art Unit with a Test on the key concepts and information they have been learning in class. They will move onto learning about the drawing technique, gesture drawing. Students will be creating sketches of many animals. Students will be using oil pastel to add color to their drawings. They will be learning blending and color mixing techniques in this unit as well.

6th Grade Students are studying the ancient cave paintings, their symbols, common animals, and information left behind by the pre-historic man. Students will have a test on Friday over the notes and information they will take in class this week. Students will have a sketchbook homework assignment due on Friday, the assignment is to create a cave sketch and spent twenty minutes on it. Extra credit points will be given if the sketch has been colored in with crayon, color pencil or markers. Students are expected to do this at home as homework and additional practice.
7th and 8th Grade Students are researching careers that involve the Visual Arts this week in the library. Students are researching careers such as, animations artists, photographer, graphic designer, fashion designer, architect, and many more. The students will create a presentation to teach the class about their career of interest. The students will be using the tool, “Prezi”, to create their visual presentation. Attached is the assignment for this task.

7th and 8th grade students will be presenting their Glogster, Artist Research projects this week to the class on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students will be graded by a rubric and will have their grades by Friday. There is no sketchbook assignment this week.
6th Grade students will be continuing with the Chinese Calligraphy and Scroll unit. Students will be taking home their projects by Friday. After this unit students will begin studying Cave Art. There is no sketchbook assignment this week.

7th and 8th grade students will be researching in the library next week. Each student has an artist that they will be creating a Glogster on. A Glogster is an online poster creation tool. It is a wonderful presentation tool as well. Students will be able to incorporate important information regarding their artists life, works, and style. The following week, students will present their Glogsters to the class. The Glogster assignment and checklist is posted this week for students to use if they are working on the assignment from home.
6th grade students will be creating chinese scrolls. Students will get to use bamboo brushes to practice calligraphy. Students will learn about the ancient and modern language of China.

6th Grade students will be working on learning drawing and sketching vocabulary terms. Students will be using these techniques in class and in their sketchbook.
7th and 8th grade students will be finalizing their painting projects and moving onto learning about Asian Art and calligraphy. Students will have Chinese characters that stand for peace, love, courage, and so on. Students will be using black ink and bamboo brushes to create murals that incorporate the language with bamboo, birds, flowers, and other simplistic designs studied from the Asian calligraphy style.

6th Grade students this week are finalizing all projects and should be taking home all of their work as this is their last week in art. On Monday the 16th sixth grade students will begin their last encore class of the year this will be their final 6 week rotation.
7th Grade students are continuing to work on their Seurat mural project. The students learned about the art and life of Georges Seurat and are creating a large class mural using his famous stippling technique.
8th Grade students are finalizing paintings using the style of Georgia O’Keeffe. They learned about Georgia’s life and her paintings from images such as skulls, mountains, and flowers from the South -West that made her very famous. Students have put time and effort into their acrylic paintings and are incorporating their own personal styles and ideas with those used by Georgia.
Once the painting projects are finished students are moving onto working on their sketching skills and shading and design techniques. Lamps are set up at each table spot-lighting objects. Students are using techniques to make objects look 3-D as well as shading techniques to show where there is light on an object and darkness & shadow.
6th grade students are learning about the lives, art, and myths of the Australian Aboriginal Tribes people. Students are creating their own symbols for communication in this unit.
7th Grade students are currently working on a self portrait project. Instead of a mirror, students are using a photo of themselves, and applying oil pastel directly onto the image. Students must learn how to correctly mix colors for skin tone, hair color, eyes, etc. This is a challenging project with wonderful results! Check out this example.
8th Grade students are studing the Pop Art Movement and the works of Andy Warhol. Students are learning about his life, works, and impact on art, commercials, and fashion. Students are creating Marilyn images using his style and color schemes. Check out this example:

No Homework because of ISAT Testing This week!
Summary of each grade:
This week 6th-8th grade students will be taking ISAT’s. The schedule will be different each day and students may not have art. We will continue to study Impressionist artists such as Monet and Mary Cassatt in 7th grade classes. In 8th grade classes we will review our Pablo Picasso notes for the upcoming test. Students in the 6th grade will be learning about prehistoric cave art.

Next week’s lessons:
Students in 6th grade will begin learning how to use the gesture technique to draw animals. The sketchbook homework will be to draw 3 animal sketches in their sketchbook for Friday’s class. This is a 30 point assignment and students should be spending at least 20 minutes total on these sketches. Students will be using oil pastels on an animal drawing in class for their project of the week.

he students in the 7th grade will be continuing to learn about the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh. They have been learning about Vincen’t portrait work and especially, his self portraits. Students will be working from a digital image of themselves and adding oil pastel to create a self portrait. They will be using similar strokes and styles of those used by Van Gogh.

re about the contemporary artist, Pablo Picasso. This week they began learning about Picasso’s life, his works, and his passion for art. Students are currently creating “Cubism” style water color faces paintings. They are using Picasso’s invention of cubism and the use of bright colors to paint portraits. Next week the focus will be on creating a “Blue, Rose, Peace Period, or Cubism style drawing and using oil pastel as the medium. These are all names of Periods in which Picasso’s art work has been categorized into, since his work ranges from the early 1900′s to mid century. And, each style of art is quite different.

Trimester 3- Week 1:
This week 6th,7th, and 8th grade students are settling into their new encore classes for 3rd trimester. Art students need to come prepared for class with a sketchbook, pencils, and a T-shirt that can protect their clothing from paint and messy materials.

There are about a dozen club dates still left, so if you are still interested in being a part of ART CLUB, come and join us on Wednesdays after school in the art room!
